SU Men's Team beats Ferrum & SU Women's Team beats Averett Tue, 10/23/2007 - Winchester, VA. |
SU MEN'S DROPS 4 GOALS
ON FERRUM
Shenandoah University likely clinched a spot in the USA South Conference men’s soccer tournament Saturday afternoon with a 4-0 shutout victory at Ferrum.
Shenandoah (4-14, 1-4 USA South) needed to beat either Averett or Ferrum (3-10-1, 1-4) to earn a berth in the six-team tournament. With the 4-0 win over the Panthers, the Hornets can now clinch the fifth seed with a home victory over AU next Saturday afternoon.
Coach Des Lawless’ side got all of the offense it would need in the first 30 minutes of Saturday’s contest. Sophomore Chris Wondree scored what proved to be the game-winner in the 19th minute before Mohamed Toure added an insurance goal 10 minutes later.
Wondree then converted a penalty kick eight minutes before halftime to give SU a commanding three-goal lead heading into the break.
Sophomore Karim Kamara completed the day’s scoring with an unassisted goal in the 70th minute.
Shenandoah outshot FC 15-2, including 5-0 in the second half. The Hornets also held a 12-2 advantage in corner kicks.
Keeper Brian Garretson had to make only one first-half save to post his sixth career shutout.
WOMEN'S TEAM PUTS UP 9 GOALS ON AVERETT
The Shenandoah University women’s soccer team clinched its third straight trip to the USA South Conference Tournament Saturday afternoon with a 9-1 victory at Averett University.
Shenandoah (4-11, 2-5 USA South) knows it will be no worse than an eight seed at the eight-team tournament beginning in two weeks. With games against Mary Baldwin and Ferrum remaining, the Hornets could rise as high at the No. 6 seed.
Freshman Krista Pattison gave Shenandoah the early lead with an unassisted goal in the seventh minute, but AU (1-14, 0-6) was able to answer 20 minutes after Pattison’s tally.
Coach Liz Pike’s team then clinched the game by pouring in four goals in the final 18 minutes of the half, with Pattison getting the game-winner in the 31st minute. She finished with four goals and classmate Kaitlin Naill had three.
The eight-goal margin is the biggest win of the season for the squad and the largest margin of victory since a 9-0 win over Mary Baldwin at the end of the 2006 season.
